What is Interoception?
Interoception is a term used in psychology and neuroscience to describe our awareness of what’s happening inside our bodies. It’s how we notice our heartbeat, the rhythm of our breath, the flutter in our stomach, or even subtle sensations like warmth, tingles, or pressure.
For many, interoception is simply about staying connected to our physical health and emotions. But for mediums, it becomes so much more — it is a sacred channel through which Spirit often communicates.
The Body as a Receiver for Spirit
Mediumship isn’t just about seeing visions or hearing messages. Spirit uses the full instrument of our being — mind, heart, and body — to bridge the worlds. Through interoception, the body becomes a receiver:
- Chills that signal a loved one’s presence.
- A sudden wave of emotion that doesn’t belong to you, but to the Spirit stepping forward.
- Pressure or warmth in a part of the body, drawing attention to a memory, illness, or validation from the one in Spirit.
- A racing heart or goosebumps, reminding you that energy has shifted into the room. What science calls “internal awareness,” mediums recognize as Spirit’s language through sensation.
Why Interoception Matters in Mediumship
The more attuned you are to your body, the stronger your connection with Spirit becomes. Interoception teaches us to listen — not just with our ears or eyes, but with every cell of our being.
When you pause, breathe, and notice the subtle shifts within, you create space for Spirit to communicate. This is where the sacred conversation begins: your body responding as Spirit impresses love, memory, and validation into the physical.
Practical Ways to Strengthen Interoception
If you’re developing your mediumship, or simply want to heighten your spiritual awareness, here are a few practices to try:
1. Mindful Breathwork – Spend a few minutes each day noticing the rise and fall of your breath. This anchors you in body awareness.
2. Body Scans – Close your eyes and slowly scan your body from head to toe. Notice any sensations, even the subtlest.
3. Journaling Sensations – After meditation or a Spirit connection, write down the physical sensations you noticed. Patterns will emerge over time.
4. Trust What You Feel – Don’t dismiss a chill, a pressure, or a sudden emotion. Acknowledge it as a message and allow it to unfold.
A Sacred Reminder
Mediumship isn’t just about seeing or hearing Spirit — it’s about feeling. Our bodies are receivers, and interoception is the awareness of those subtle shifts. The goosebumps, the quickening heartbeat, the sudden wave of emotion — these are all ways Spirit lets us know we’re in connection.
And for me, as a medium, that connection is the greatest honor of all.
